I’m Sue, a temporary safe care and adoptive mother who lives in Cape Town.

My motherhood journey looks very different to most others and if I am honest, different to how I had imagined it to be.

Isn’t that life though, full of joy and pain, complexities and adventures.

I spent my twenties and early thirties traveling around the world as a missionary, serving the poor, working alongside children rescued from human trafficking in Cambodia, trekking to remote villages in the Himalayas, loving orphans and building homes for widows in India, visiting a children’s hospital every week in Southern California and connecting with local moms in a small village in Northern Ireland.

After returning to South Africa I gave my time and energy into volunteering as a doula at Mowbray Maternity Hospital. It was there that my life changed, a helpless, orphaned premature baby was placed on my chest for much needed skin to skin contact. A dream was birthed over the next 8 weeks as I spent hours each day giving her the love and attachment she so desperately needed.

Ten years later I am a temporary safe care mom, looking after babies between birth and adoption. I’ve had 10 babies in my care.

My dream is to create awareness of the crisis of vulnerable children in South Africa, to empower and mobilise local communities to be part of the solution and to model opening up my home and heart to the most vulnerable in our society, babies.

The Mom archive is what we need in the modern era we are living in.

We’ve lost the sense of the village.
