About Us
Tucked away on Red Earth Farm, just 4 km from the village of McGregor and 15 km from Robertson, The Red Caboose is a beautifully restored 1941 South African Railways carriage turned self-catering hideaway. It's the kind of place that makes a family trip feel like an adventure before you've even unpacked.
The Space
The carriage sleeps up to 4 guests (2 adults and 2 children) across two cozy bedrooms:
Main bedroom – a double bed for the grown-ups
Bunk room – a bunk bed perfectly sized for the kids
There's one bathroom with a bath, basin, and toilet, plus a self-catering kitchen with a bar fridge and freezer, stove, oven, and all the basic cutlery and crockery you'll need. A dining booth built right into the carriage adds to the nostalgic charm, and fresh linen and towels are provided throughout.
Outside
This is where the magic happens:
A wood-fired hot tub with sweeping valley and mountain views
A splash pool for warm days
A firepit for evening braais under the stars
Safe, secure on-site parking
Location
Surrounded by farmland and mountains, the setting feels wonderfully remote, yet you're never far from things to do:
McGregor Village (4 km) – cafés, restaurants, and shops
Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve (2 km) – hiking and wildlife
Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary – a favorite for kids
Robertson (15 km) – wine farms and more
Why Guests Love It
Past visitors consistently rave about the restoration work, the attention to detail, and the sheer novelty of sleeping in a piece of railway history. Reviewers have called it "a piece of heaven on earth" and praised how clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully stocked the carriage is, right down to the little touches like bath salts. (booking.com.)
A perfect little escape for families craving something different — equal parts nostalgia, nature, and quiet luxury.
