The Santa Shoebox Project originated in Cape Town in 2006 with a humble 180 shoeboxes. Since that time the number of Santa Shoeboxes donated has reached a total of 1 226 756. The shoeboxes are distributed to underprivileged children attending more than 1 000 educational and care facilities each year, through more than 60 satellites around South Africa and Namibia. Each Shoebox contains 8 required items – a toothbrush and toothpaste, facecloth and soap, sweets, a toy, school supplies and an outfit of clothing – all new, unused and age appropriate. Shoeboxes are pledged by donors for children living in their own communities.
In addition to the Santa Shoebox, the Project also has a socio-economic development initiative, the SSB Legacy, focussed on early childhood development (ECD) –
